I am disgusted with America. I usually don’t get too uppity but I am truly disgusted with the culture we have created for ourselves. Earlier this week, a college freshman killed himself after his roommate allegedly taped him having a gay sexual encounter. As a gay college student who was ridiculed for his sexuality a few times, I understand his pain. I’ve dealt with years of intolerance but nothing like the extravagance of today’s idiocy.
I feel that teenage-kind has shifted so malevolently that it’s hard to find humanity in many of these children. I saw the extremes that my younger sister’s peers would go to in order to make her feel like less of a person. She wasn’t gay. She wasn’t deformed. She didn’t wrong this people in any way. They just wanted to make her miserable.
I have always been a champion of pop culture and the lessons it can teach us but I feel that it has done us grave wrong this time around. Ever since the release of Mean Girls, the role of the “bully” has been glorified. Many miss the point of the story and see Regina George as a figure who was popular because she was a monster, not as a tragic figure who gets her comeuppance and amends her ways.
I’ve been bullied for being fat, having glasses, and even for being gay and ignoring this stupidity would eventually make it go away. Today is much different. Most kids are not happy until they reach some kind of conflict. As seen this week, it can lead to death.
Besides pop culture, I blame parents. Children aren’t born to know that homosexuality is different. They are taught it. Children are taught this sense of otherness that alienates anyone that isn’t like them.
So cut the shit and stop marginalizing us. Let us join the damn army. Let us get married. And for Christ’s sake, give me the option to donate some blood.
